Frequently Asked Questions

Are Virtual Lessons an option?

Yes! While the majority of lessons are in-person, students may opt to meet virtually short or long term. The teacher may need to make lessons virtual due to health concerns, travel, or inclement weather. Lesson fees are the same for virtual lessons.

Where do I go for my in-person lessons?

My studio is located just outside of Crozet, approximately 15 minutes west of the City of Charlottesville and 5 minutes from downtown Crozet. Parking is available. Street address will be provided after you sign up for your lesson.

What should I bring to my lessons?

A Device to record your lesson (App on your phone or iPad*, digital recorder) An iPad is especially helpful for ear-training and sightreading apps Music that you would like to work on Small notebook or tablet (for lesson notes) Water

What do I do if I'm running late to a lesson?  How late can I arrive?

Please notify your teacher ASAP. After 15 minutes, the lesson will be forfeited. Studio Membership students will be given an alternative assignment or asynchronous lesson.

What is the cancellation/make-up policy?

If you must cancel a lesson, please do so through your My Music Staff Student/Parent Portal ASAP and text/email the studio. If at least 48-hours notice is provided and you wish to make-up your lesson in-person, it must be scheduled within 6 days of the missed lesson. Otherwise, an alternative assignment or asynchronous lesson will be provided to keep you active and engaged between lessons. No shows and non-emergency cancellations made with less than 48-hours notice will not be rescheduled or provided an alternative assignment or asynchronous lesson.

What do I do if I am sick?

If you are a Studio Membership student and are not feeling well, please contact the studio ASAP. If you feel well enough to meet, we can meet over Zoom at the scheduled time. If you do not feel up for it, an alternative assignment will be provided.

What are alternative assignments?

These assignments are listening or writing exercises that will supplement the student's work in their lessons. It might include learning more about shows, composers or various singers of the songs that you are currently working on in your lesson. Examples are available in the Online Resources section of your Student Portal. (Only available to Membership Students, at least 48 hours notice required)

What is an asynchronous lesson?

Students submit video recordings of themselves performing exercises and songs that they have been working on. Then I will respond with personalized feedback in the form of a video, accompanying lesson notes and/or annotated sheet music.

What happens if there is inclement weather?

If we are unable to meet in-person due to inclement weather, you will be contacted by email. Updates will also be posted on social media and My Music Staff. Lessons for that day will be provided via Zoom, or an alternative assignment or asynchronous lesson will be arranged for the students.

What happens if the teacher needs to cancel a lesson?

If the teacher needs to cancel a lesson, additional lesson times will be added on a Friday, Saturday, and/or Sunday where make-up lessons can be scheduled as soon as possible. If necessary, credit can be saved for use at a later date (e.g. during a "5th week" of a month).

What do I do if I plan to discontinue lessons or need to change my Membership Plan?

If you are a Studio Membership Student who wishes to disenroll or change your plan, please fill out the disenrollment/change of membership form at least 2 weeks before the month that you wish to the change to take effect. By disenrolling, you acknowledge that the studio bills Studio Membership Students on a monthly basis and no refunds can be made and no changes to your account will take effect until the 1st of the following month. Drop In Students do not need to complete the disenrollment form.
