Why I'm passionate about the voice
I’m Amelia Camacho, and I’ve spent 24 years helping individuals and communities find their voices, both in music and in life. My mission is to empower my students to sing and speak with confidence, unlocking the joy and freedom that comes from authentic self-expression. Whether through private lessons, leading congregations, teaching workshops, or coaching performers, my goal is to build confidence in healthy singing and speaking while fostering the joy and freedom that comes from self-expression in all styles of music.
My vocal journey began somewhat unexpectedly. Though I primarily studied piano and flute in throughout grade school, singing became a true passion in college, thanks to a friend who encouraged me to take voice lessons. Early in my training, I was diagnosed with vocal nodes, a condition linked to chronic coughing from frequent illnesses in my youth. This diagnosis led me to speech therapy, vocal rest, and eventually surgery, sparking my fascination with vocal health and the mechanics of the voice. This experience profoundly shaped my teaching philosophy. I focus on functional exercises that build strong, healthy voices while also incorporating ear training and sight-reading to develop well-rounded musicians.
After completing graduate school in 1999, I began my career as a Director of Worship and Music, and gradually expanded to teach piano and voice lessons. In more recent years, I decided to focus more on teaching solely voice and engaging in a variety of freelance work. I maintain a private voice studio near Crozet, VA, and continue to perform in churches, local theater, and opera productions. My diverse experiences also inspire my current exploration into voiceover work, where I’m excited to lend my voice to new projects.
In my free time, I enjoy gardening, cooking, baking, running, and cycling—activities that, like music, keep me grounded and inspired!
